HOW DOES LOOSE LEASH WALKING WORK?

Los Angeles is a beautiful place, and we all want to enjoy it with our dog! It's normal for dogs to get excited when they go outside. Your dog loves exploring the outside world with you.

But they might need a bit of help to understand how to maintain that excitement without trying to pull you to the other side of Calabasas.

Positive reinforcement training is a practical, animal welfare friendly way to train your dog. There are no shock collars or prongs. Instead, positive reinforcement techniques like loose leash walking will boost you and your dog's relationship.

What Is Loose-Leash Walking?

Loose leash walking is a dog training technique. This technique uses a leash, some treats, and a clicker. A clicker is a simple device that will make a clicking noise when you push the button. The noise, combined with a treat, lets your dog know when it's done the right thing. It's sort of like when we hear a "ding" noise in a gaming show.

Loose leash walking is a positive way to teach your dog how to walk correctly on a lead.

If your dog is a strong puller, keeping it on a tight lead and yanking it back can be frustrating for you and your dog. We offer loose leash training sessions, so walking with your dog in Los Angeles can be enjoyable and stress-free!

How Does It Work?

Your dog will be on a leash and rewarded for good behavior. Whenever the dog is calm and walks alongside you or one of our trainers, it will receive a treat and hear a clicking noise. This sound encourages your dog to repeat the positive behavior.

Does your dog attempt to pull on the leash and ignore your instructions? These are common problems. There are ways to teach your dog how to behave appropriately and to stop when you stop. Walking your dog on the lead, stopping in your tracks, and rewarding your pet when it stops with you is an effective method.

Should your dog attempt to pull on the leash or ignore instructions, you can calmly back up and then walk forwards again once it is calm. Dogs often yank on the leash to go sniffing. As well as treats and the clicker, your dog will enjoy being rewarded with the loose leash training method by being allowed to sniff what it wants when it doesn't pull.

Is your dog too excited to take treats? Dogs love to be outside and get distracted. Many dogs need a moment to take a treat and have their good behavior rewarded when they're out. By using a clicker and stopping for a moment, we can get the dog's attention and reward its behavior. Even if it doesn't take the treat, it's important to keep offering to maintain consistency.
